Among the many changes taking place under the Affordable Care Act in 2014, there will be coverage for mental health care and addiction recovery in all health insurance plans. The link between mental health and physical health has been established for many years. For example, chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. This new opportunity for care means that we all need to know more about mental health.
One way to learn is through the new series, Community Conversations on Mental Health, a project of the Mental Health Association in Tompkins County and Suicide Prevention & Crisis Service. The series will explore the topics of trauma, cultural diversity in mental health care, and suicide prevention through a total of six programs.
