Volunteering with Youth Services at MHATC

Volunteers in Youth Services assist the program director in providing welcoming, flexible programming for adolescents and young adults facing mental health concerns.  

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Must be 18+ years old
  • Pass state-required background checks: NYS OCFS Statewide Central Register Database Check, NYS Justice Center Staff Exclusion List, Fingerprinting Criminal Background Check
  • Adherence to MHATC Confidentiality Policy
  • Desire to make meaningful, supportive connections with youth
  • Must be punctual, reliable and responsible
  • Must possess qualities of a good role model for youth

Schedule of Programming and Duties:

  • Wednesdays–Youth Wellness Recovery Action Plan, 4:15pm-6:45pm
    • Peer support, self-advocacy and wellness workshop for adolescents, dinner served, typically attended by between 3 and 8 participants, led by two WRAP facilitators from MHATC staff
    • Volunteer assists facilitators in setting up group room, workshop discussion, and clean-up
  • Thursdays–Creative Wellness Youth Group 4:15pm-6:45pm
    • Open peer support and art-making session for adolescents, dinner served, typically attended by between 3 and 8 participants, led by Director of Youth Services
    • Volunteer assists facilitators in setting up group room, workshop discussion, and clean-up
  • 1st and 2nd Fridays–Visits to Cayuga Medical Center, 1:40pm-3:20pm, vehicle required
    • Session of peer support/self advocacy group activities with patients admitted to the Adolescent Behavioral Services Unit at CMC
    • Volunteer meets Director of Youth Services at MHATC at 1:40pm to go to CMC and assist in facilitation from 2pm-3pm, then returns to MHATC
  • Optional: Fridays–Young Adults Group, 3:30pm-4:30pm
    • Drop-in peer support for Young Adults (ages 18-30)
    • Volunteer attends group as a peer and engages in discussion, gaining insight to participant perspective in peer support programming
  • Additional:  Youth Services volunteers may be invited to accompany and assist the program director during visits to school communities/youth groups for presentations and events depending on scheduling and availability
