The Mental Health Association in Tompkins County is seeking compassionate, dedicated, and energetic individuals to join our team for our annual summer day-camp—Kids First.  This is a fun, challenging opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in our community. The Kids First Program serves youth in Tompkins County who are struggling with an emotional, behavioral, or mental health diagnosis in their own lives and/or in their families.  Our goal is to create a fun, healthy, day-camp setting for youth who are unable to attend a mainstream summer camp due to their unique needs.

Position Title: Camp Counselor

Reports to: Camp Program Director, Director of Youth Services

Type: Seasonal
Dates of Employment:
Part-time Training  Mon.-Fri. 6/18/18-6/29/18
Full-time Camp SessionMon.-Fri. 7/02/18-8/13/18
*No Camp on 7/4

Wage: $10.40/hour during training, $12.00/hour during camp session

 

Position Summary: A Camp Counselor facilitates daytime camp activities and supervises campers. They are responsible for knowing the whereabouts of each camper in their charge at all times during duty hours.  Camp Counselors actively engage with campers to encourage participation, provide emotional support, and build campers’ life skills.

 

Background Required and Qualifications:

  • Must be 18+ years old
  • Must be punctual, reliable, and responsible
  • Must have experience working with children and/or special needs populations
  • Ability to work standing/walking majority of day
  • Ability to complete daily written documentation and reports
  • Ability to multi-task and remain calm in high-stress situations
  • Must be available for the entire camp session and training period
  • Strong communication and skills
  • Must pass NYS mandated background checks
  • Mental Health First Aid Certification*
  • First Aid/CPR/BLS Certification*

*If you do not have these certifications, MHATC will arrange trainings for you

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be knowledgeable of and adheres to all camp policies, rules and guidelines
  • Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with all staff members
  • Supervises campers during all daily activities to ensure physical and emotional safety
  • Swims with campers at daily trips to Cass Park Pool
  • Assists campers in building skills including problem-solving, communication skills, relaxation techniques, social skills, self-esteem and expression of emotions
  • Assesses the appropriateness of campers’ behavior, intervene/de-escalate behavioral issues and report behavior problems to the Camp Program Director
  • Completes daily progress notes for their assigned campers
  • Completes behavior/incident/injury/concern reports as needed
  • Seeks advice from Camp Program Director and/or Director of Youth Services as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Position Title: Camp Program Director
Reports to: Director of Youth Services
Type: Seasonal full-time
Dates of Employment: 6/18/2018-8/13/2018
                                    *No camp on 7/4
Wage: $15.00/hour

Position Summary: The Camp Program Director facilitates the development and implementation of the camp program. They are responsible for communicating with staff, guest speakers, and others contributors to the camp program and have the ability to work with others with minimal supervision.  The Camp Director deals with campers, staff, and families with compassion while maintaining the integrity of the Kids First Camp program and its expectations. 

Background Required and Qualifications:

  • Must be 21+ years old
  • Must be punctual, reliable, and responsible
  • Minimum 1 year management/supervisory experience
  • Minimum 2 years experience working with children
  • Experience working with special needs populations
  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, recreation, or education related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to work standing/walking majority of day
  • Ability to multi-task and remain calm in high-stress situations
  • Must be available for the entire camp session and training period
  • Must be comfortable interfacing with parents, campers, staff and collaborators
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license, and an insured, reliable vehicle
  • Mental Health First Aid Certification*
  • First Aid/CPR/BLS Certification*

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be knowledgeable of and adheres to all camp policies, rules and guidelines
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Youth Services on camp activities
  • Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with all staff members
  • Greets campers and families each morning for sign-in and each afternoon for sign-out
  • Observes the youth peer culture to identify problems, make recommendations and implements solutions as necessary
  • Oversees the daily schedule and makes changes when necessary
  • Reports all difficulties related to health, behavior and other problems immediately to the Director of Youth Services
  • Monitors and ensures appropriate camper behavior and adherence to camp rules and regulations.
  •  Ensures campers understand behavior expectations and disciplinary measures, and follows through with these measures
  • Assists the Director of Youth Services is holding weekly staff meetings
  • Assists the Director of Youth Services in the completion of all camp paperwork and the supervision of staff in the completion of their responsibilities
  • Handles emergency/crisis situations in conjunction with the Director of Youth Services
  • Assists the Director of Youth Services in assessing the overall program to identify any changes that need to be made for optimum functioning
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Title:          Youth Services Skill-Builder (PT)

Report to:                Youth Services Director        

MHATC’s Skill-Builders provide Respite and Skill-Building services to youth in Tompkins County who are at risk of hospitalization or residential placement for their mental health challenges.  Skill-Builders work one-on-one with youth to help them work toward specific goals and objectives outlined by the youth’s case manager to help the youth stay safe and successful in their home setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet with assigned youth in their homes/communities to work on objectives and goals described in service plan
  • Work with youth and families to design a schedule and activities that meet their needs and goals
  • Transport youth to and from skill-building activities
  • Attend bi-weekly team meetings at MHATC
  • Document each visit on a progress note for Medicaid billing

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience working with children
  • A vehicle, clean driving record and up-to- date insurance
  • Age 21 or older
  • Strong writing skills and organizational skills
  • Ability to be flexible to accommodate family’s needs
  • Must pass a criminal background check and Statewide Central Register Clearance
  • 1-year commitment to position preferred
  • Experience with special needs populations preferred

Hours:

  • Varies depending on client/caseload, typically 6-16 hours/week, afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends

Wage:

  • $10/hr for 3-month probationary period, $12/hr after 3 months
  • $4/visit travel reimbursement
